Company History

Wichman Monuments was founded in 1946 by F. W. Wichman, Sr. Mr. Wichman moved to Chattanooga in 1937 to build and run a branch office for Columbus Marble Works in Columbus, Mississippi. After World War II ended in 1945; Mr. Wichman decided the time had come for him to start his own business. So by February 20, 1946, he had opened his doors at 5225 Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, Tennessee. The business grew and expanded and by 1977; he retired and his son, Fred Wichman, Jr. became president and C.E.O. Fred began working in the business at an early age and by 1953 was working full time. He has had extensive training in memorial design and modern manufacturing techniques.

Wichman Monuments was invited to become a member of Monument Builders of North America in 1958.  This organization has been recognized as the premier and official leader for both wholesale and retail monument manufacturers, dealers, bronze memorialists and many associate firms that are involved in the memorial business or it?s suppliers from all over the world.  There are only a few hundred monument dealers who have been accepted as members out of approximately 6,000 firms who claim to be bonafide monument dealers.  (Many claim but not all qualify).

In 1958, Mr. Wichman, Sr. took off 6 months from his business in order to found The Monument Builders of Tennessee.  During these 6 months, he traveled across the state from one end to the other encouraging all legitimate monument companies to become members and support the high standards of material and workmanship that are required to be a legitimate memorial dealer.

There are many so called "monument dealers" who have only a website and e-mail addresses but do not qualify to become members of The Monument Builders of North America.  We are proud to be dues paying members in good standing with both national and state organizations.  We proudly display our seals and welcome you to check us out.

By the early 1980's, we were delivering monuments and markers in 4 states and had grown to be the largest company in the state of Tennessee and one of the top 25 in the United States.

We continue developing state of the art designs and furnish our clients with the very finest material and workmanship available in the United States.

Fred was joined by his son, Rick, in the early 1990's. By the year 2001, Rick was joined by both his sons, Travis and Trent.

We are ready and able to handle all memorial needs and can manufacture any conceivable monument design and deliver it wherever it needs to go.

We have shown a few of our designs here, but we have more than 25,000 additional designs to choose from that can be made in more than a hundred different colors of granite and marble from all over the world.
